Hi,

I am putting my system together and hope I didn't make a wrong move. I have
the Asus K8V mb and it came with a back plate and retaining frame. I took
off the retaining frame and placed the gold nipples on the back plate. I
looked at the pack plate that came with the cooler and noticed that it
didn't have small studs which protrude through the mb as the Asus back plate
does.

Can I use the Asus back plate and will it get enough contact with the cpu?

If I have to use the Zalman back plate without the built in studs, I did
take the backing off the back plate. (Probably shouldn't have, but thought
it was just is was suppose to be removed.)

The Asus back plate seems to be glued on fairly well.

Sorry if I didn't make this clearer. Appreciate your help.

I could not figure out how to remove the stock plate either, and if you
check the height of the gold nipples, there would seem to be a problem.
THe instructions show them mounted flush on the board with a paper
washer. The "nipple" on the board would seem to make the gold ones too
high and there fore not put as much pressure on the cpu from the fan.

However I saw a review from a person @ newegg.com claiming that it
worked fine.

Me I can not see that happening without removing the stock backplate.

I used the zalman on an old barton.

The fan that comes in the retail box is not that loud, and seems to do a
good job, at cooling

I worked it out by cleaning the backplate that came with Zalman where I took
off the backing real good. Then stripped the black washer material off of
the backplate that came with the cpu and put that on the Zalman backplate
(The one with no nipples). I then used the gold nipples and put the hs on
with no problem. I do think that you are correct that with the nipple and
the gold nipple, it would be too high and not enough pressure.

All worked out well. Just turned it on and it doesn't post. I can't hear
any posting information and there is no signal to the monitor. All the fans
are spinning and the cd and dvd drawers open. Everything on the system is
new. Do I have to connect to a speaker system, or is there one hidden on
the mb?

A question if I may. Does it matter which SATA (Via or Promise) I use? I
have two drives. One the 74 Raptor and the other a WD 120 Gig. Just want
them to run like C and D. No Raid.

Thanks for your response. This old retired guy have his work cut out for
him.

I removed the existing back plate by pushing on the studs that come
through the motherboard with a plastic nut driver handle. That
allowed me to get enough force to loosen the glue that it on.

Then put on the Zalman backplate with the brass nipples and it all
works fine. Did leave the backing on the Zalman plate though.
