K8N-E Questions HDD-SATA

Greetings, all.

I have the subject motherboard and have an issue and a question.

Issue: Occasionally, upon a cold start, the computer will just stop the
booting process. It will do this with Windows XP both SP1 and SP2
(slipstreamed during installation). Pressing the reset button and a few
tries later, or selecting a different partition with remedy this. Both NTFS
and FAT32. But has anyone experienced a similar problem and identified the
issue?

Question: What is the effect of enabling 32-bit transfers for a Maxtor SATA
150
250 GB HDD that I have installed on this AMD 64 system? Other,
than of course, its 32 bits...

TIA

System Specifications:
Windows XP SP1 and XP2
1GB 3200 (tested 24 hours Prime 95 no errors)
250GB SATA HDD Maxtor
Asus K8NE AMD 64 3200+ 1 MB L2 cache with most current BIOS (1004) and all
drivers, not overclocked
(nVidia firewall not installed)
ATI 9600XT
mouse/keyboard/floppy/display
Antec case with 350W PSU

I had the very same problem with this board and my prob was that I was running a secondary Ide drive in Sata 2 with one of those Converters that plug into the Hd and change it into a Sata Drive.
Machine suffered the same symptoms as you describe.
Because The device worked on my Gygabyte Board, I never thought that
it would be incompatible with the Asus board and so tried all manner
of settings to get a decent boot up to no avail.
As soon as I unpluuged the converter, Machine sprang into life and has
been a dream ever since..
Look toward a Sata setting in bios Better still Beg or borrow another
HD to test if your drive is OK.
Asus do suggest to make a floppy up with sata drivers from system
disk, And Boot from there.Pressing F6 upon xp install and going that
way. Maybe this will solve your issue, Never Know!

Thanks for confirming I was not alone. I am connecting directly to the
nVidia SATA Channel 1 with the Maxtor SATA drive. The version 1004 BIOS
notes on the Asus web site refer to a patch to nVidia SATA detection, but I
suppose there must be more room for improvement ;-)

ACK! I guess I will buy a regular PATA drive and use the SATA for data
storage....
