K8N-E Deluxe memory reading incorrectly

Thomas

I have two sticks of double sided no-name 512 meg ddr (pc3200) ram. The
name seems to be infineon.

Anyhow, if I use either stick alone, the system detects them properly and
runs at 400 (and the sisoft benchmarks reflect this), however, if I put them
together they'll only run at 333. I've tried switching the order, using the
3rd dimm slot instead of the second but nothing makes a difference.

Anyone else experienced this? Is it something I'm not understanding or
maybe because of the no name RAM?

TIA

Your no-name (cheap) RAM is probably causing the problem with timing errors
when you try to use the two sticks together. I'd highly recommend you get
some QUALITY RAM to avoid future problems like data errors in your system.

Read your manual, there are positions of memory sticks that will lead
to reduced speed of memoryin use.

I just had one second-handed K8N, but not yet test it.

I checked that, and according to the manual it should be 400.

Thanks, though.

Look at line 18 of Table 1 in the manual. The two sticks
should be placed in slot 1 and slot 3. Perhaps then it will
default to the correct value. If it doesn't, leave the RAM
in slot 1 and slot 3, and set the memory clock and timing
manually.

The bus is single channel, for the data bits. All sticks share
the same data bus. But the address bus is split it two pieces.
By placing the RAM in slot 1 and slot 3, the two DIMMs get
driven by different address drivers, and that allows the
sticks to be run faster than other configs. If the sticks
are in slot2 and slot 3, I think they are driven by the
same address bus, and with that loading, the bus cannot
go at full speed.

Fixed the problem by switching out one of the no name sticks for another
one.

The Cas # Latency was different between the two of them and that seemed to
cause the problem.

Thanks all.
