Just wondering

I've been reading this newsgroup with Outlook's modifed version of a Win98
newsreader for a few weeks now. I knows its normal to see many "RE"s in the
subject when iniitially subscrbing to a newsgroup. Yet, at this newsgroup,
I continue to see them all the time as standalone posts to date including
posts for today's date. My settings are default, and no different than any
other newsgroups regarding downloading posts. I generally WON'T read
standalone "RE" posts. Is this a newsgroup specific problem, or are the
repliers intentionally making standalone "RE" posts instead of replying
directly to the original post? Someone fill me in.

Many people don't realize that they should continue on the same thread they
started,or in the case of the web interface they cannot find the original
thread to check for answers to their ?'s.(God forbid they check the time when
they post)

What are your View settings? Grouping (or threading) of conversations is
enabled? Also, if you are showing Unread only, earlier posts in a thread
will not be visible. Toggle to show all and, if available, the related
posts should appear.

You mean Outlook Express. Outlook (a completely different
product) doesn't do newsgroups.

It's hard to be sure, but my guess is that you are either set to
"Hide read messages" or you are deleting messages after reading
them. In either case, you will be see messages within the thread,
but not see the beginnings of them. My personal choice is the
"Hide read messages" setting, because I don't want to see the
already-read messages, but you have to decide for yourself which
you prefer.

Or else in View | Current View, you may have "Group messages by
conversation" unchecked, so the thread is not kept together.

it is because people might reply to a thread as a new post, rather than to
an existing post within that discussion/topic

Thanks.
But, I don't see the original post I made anywhere. And, its just this
newgroup that this happens. All my newsreader settings are the same for all
news servers and groups. And, I see a buttload of standalone "RE"s to date
at this newsgroup compared to others including MS groups I read. Your reply
was standalone as well on my newsreader.
