Just want to share files and printer XP Home

I want to share files between my desktop and laptop both
using XP Home. I have a Netgear hub and ethernet
connections on both computers. I first tried the wizard
to set up a home network and it didn't work, I couldn't
see the other computers or shared files. Then I manually
tried to do the workgroup thing. Gave each a static IP.
Pinged 127.0.0.1 on each to make sure the computers could
bind with their cards, was good. Then I tried to ping
the other computer 100% loss :( What could I be doing
wrong. Once again I just want to share files and a
printer, no internet connection. Thanks for any help
