Just starting to use Access

I'm new at this. I'm trying to build a database to track documents. They
have things in common, yet they are different. For example, They all have
identifying information (document id, title, point of contact, etc). They
all have dates (date submitted, date received, date approved, due date, etc.)
The dates submitted indicate where they were submitted, so that could be
different from document to document. Some documents may have descriptive
information that others don't. I don't see how to make different tables out
of this information. It seems like all the information would go into one
table. That being the case, I'm thinking I wouldn't need a primary key. But
then I'm asking myself, "Why am I doing this in Access?" I currently have
seperate excel spreadsheets for each document type, but that doesn't seem the
best way to track these documents, either.

Can anyone help clear the fog here?

Go to http://www.datastrat.com/DataStrat2.html and download DocMgr to use as
a starting point.

Whilie I've never used it, Arvin does quality work, so I'm sure it'll be
useful!

Access 2003 is able to open databases created by Access 97, 2000, 2002 and
2003.

What error are you getting when you try to open it?

If I click on DocMgr I get a message that says "You are trying to open a
read-only database". If I click on DocMgr 2K I get "Database is read only"
Then when I click on okay I get a blurb about DocMgr. If I click on okay I
get another message that says "Cannot open. Database is read-only". Then I
have to restart the computer because I can't get out of it.

The only thing that occurs to me is that Arvin may have copied onto the web
from a CD, so the read-only bit is set.

Find the file in Windows Explorer and right-click on it. Choose Properties.
If the Read-only property is set, uncheck it.

The download is a zip file, Leslie. Windows XP has some built-in support for
the zip format ("Compressed Folders") and will allow you to browse the zip
file as though it were a folder and open the files it contains, but you'll
keep getting that message in Access until you unzip the file. Using the
right mouse button, click and drag the zip file, and when you release the
mouse button one of the options in the pop-up menu is 'Extract'. Just follow
the on-screen instructions from there.
