Just intrigued.....

I have lived in peaceful coexistence with MS AntiSpyware for some months but
today it leapt into action immediately after booting up my computer.

As far as I recall, the message told me that something was trying to install
a new toolbar in Internet Explorer. I blocked it and the 'blocked event
details' in MS AntiSpyware reads -

Internet Explorer ShellBrowser: ShellBrowser Microsoft® Windows® Operating
System {01E04581-4EEE-11D0-BFE9-00AA005B4383}

As a matter of interest, does this indicate that some spyware has tried to
invade my machine or could it be something to do with the eight Windows
updates I downloaded recently?

Thanks
David

I doubt that it had anything to do with the updates, as I
updated just a few hours ago and it didn't happen to me,
although it wouldn't surprise me if it's just a false
alarm (let's hope that it's doing its job correctly).
Run a full system scan with MSAS and make certain that
every check box is checked. If it doesn't find anything,
run a full system scan with Ad-aware 1.06 Personal
(lavasoft.com) and make certain that "Search for
negligible entries" and "Search for low risk entries" are
checked. If nothing still found, reboot to Safe Mode
(press F8 when system rebooting) and run scans again. If
nothing is found, make certain to scan for viruses,
trojans, and internet worms, as these could also be to
blame.

Hope this helps.

Hi

It is also a good idea to "houseclean" a PC before any scan
to save scantime, remove hidden spyware or virus and remove
all junk that is left behind. It is really surprising for any user to
see this "mountain of junk/crap" within almost all PCs.

I can recommend CCleaner, www.ccleaner.com

My guess about this one is that it is harmless, but I haven't pinned down a
cause--I just know I've seen it a few times recently, perhaps whilst
checking on whether machines have received those patches. I sure wouldn't
recommend that others trust my instincts, though--I've been wrong too many
times!

Thanks, Alan

I've done as you suggest, except for using SpyBot in place of Ad-Aware, and
all seems ok. So its just one of those things, I imagine but thanks for
your help.
