After much debate I've installed SP2 and things 'look' ok at the moment
(famous last words). I had been running AVG anti virus, Zone Alarm firewall
and Firefox browser. I've been told to remove Zone Alarm. On my desktop the
Internet Explorer icon has been replaced by the Firefox icon and labelled
"Internet"(the original Firefox icon remains). Is this an error of some
sort. I have no desktop shortcut to IE although it is in the Programs group
(and shows it is SP2 version when fired up). Also how do I know that the
new firewall is working and is it as good as Zone Alarm (free version)? Can
I still run AVG or is this superfluous now? After so many buggy operating
systems I'm not about to trust Microsoft's word on these things.

SP2 turns on XP firewall by default . Zone Alarm is probably better than XP
due to monitoring of both directions . Of course this makes it more
temperamental. I run AVG 6.0 , I see no reason to install the SP2 freebee
and use two antiviruses. Either one that you choose should be kept updated
weekly. JJ

For your info JJ, AVG 6.0 has been superceded by a free version of AVG7. I
believe they will stop supporting 6.0 shortly.

I didn't know the SP2 firewall only stopped incoming. Think I'll keep Zone
Alarm.

There is no "SP2 freebee" as far as anti virus is concerned.
There has never been an AV of any kind included with Windows XP.
However SP-2 does come with the Security Center which can monitor the AV
program you have installed.

Right you are Jupiter , SP2 has none , but SP1 ships with a free copy of a
antivirus. My mistake Eagle Eye. JJ

SP-1 does not either.
You may be thinking of the Security Update CD that Microsoft made available
February 2004.
A separate CD was included which had anti virus and a firewall.
