AGP ATI X700 Radeon 256Mb, Eizo 17" LCD, 2.4GHz P4 1Gb Ram

I've just installed 5472 on a fresh partition. Whenever I try to do
something that requires increased privileges (change network settings for
instance), the permissions dialog pops up and then the screen goes black.
This happens in safe mode or normal mode and at all resoultions. The display
settings report:-
- Generic PnP Monitor on RADEON X700 (Microsoft Corporation WDDM)

Ctrl+Alt+Del gets the screen back with usual log off options. If I press
cancel to return to the desktop I just get the black screen again.

Any ideas?

I would try to install the ATI drivers but that of course pops up the
'Continue' dialog and the screen goes black.

Thanks
Michael

Try turning off UAC then use "Run as administrator" to run the ATI setup.

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for the quick reply.

If I try to turn off UAC I get the 'Continue' dialog and then the black
screen - catch 22!

Any other ideas?

Michael

I can't remember what the default is on that dialog, but if the default is
Continue, can you hit Enter on the black screen? Or hit the arrow if it's
not the default, then hit Enter?

I'm assuming the dialog is still "there", just not visible.

Thanks,

Dave H.

Hi Dave,

I can see the UAC dialog ok and can click on Continue or Cancel (both
produce a black screen). I've tried Continue and letting it run (and
pressing Enter occasionally) but nothing happens.

Michael

Ahhh, I missed that part. Sorry about that.

If you can click CTRL ALT DEL, can you get to Task Manager and see if a task
is hung?

Dave H.

Never mind on Task Manager. If you want to see processes from all users, it
requires UAC. This is a nice one. :)

Dave H.

Michael,

I had (have) the exact same problem. P4 3.05 HT, 1GB Ram, Radeon x800Pro 256.

The only way I've found to get by this is to disable Aero. Just change your
theme to Vista Classic or Windows classic.

ONce you do this, you can continue as normal.

The updated catalyst drivers from ATI don't help with this either.

John

I have an idea. Try to run Startup Repair. Then make sure you have UAC
disabled for the period of time that you want to install the drivers. You
can turn it off at msconfig. Also go to run box>type secpol.msc in run>3rd
item down enable run all as admin. Then use the reghack for being able to
log on as admin:

*Run Startup Repair*

Win RE:

If you have a Vista DVD, there is a promising "feature" or utility in Vista
called Win RE or Windows Recovery Environment.

***Accessing Windows RE (Repair Environment):***

1) Insert Media into PC (the DVD you burned)

2) ***You will see on the Vista logo setup screen after lang. options in the
lower left corner, a link called "System Recovery Options."***

3) Select your OS for repair.

4) Its been my experience that you can see some causes of the crash from
theWin RE feature:

You'll have a choice there of using:

1) Startup Repair
2) System Restore
3) Complete PC Restore

Getting UAC Out of the Way *while you get the job done*:

Go to: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon>Add a new key: SpecialAccounts>And a sub-key in
the SpecialAccounts key: UserList>In the UserList key, create a DWORD
(32-bit): Administrator Set value to: 1

Whether you elect to keep these in place after you get the job done, is up
to you.

Then, since public feedback to MSFT is as effective as 28 years of "peace
keeping forces" in Lebanon--(unless you're deaf dumb and blind, you
understand the stupidity and naivite of a Secretary of State with no
training and experience for her job except being petted on the head at
Stanford University and promoted without any substantive ability or
expertise) so ring MSFT's bell where the screwups live. Email the PM of UAC
at MSFT and let him know how well this is working.

I'm going to start advocating specific feedback to MSFT personnel since I
have watched several months of total chaos with Vista improvments and bug
fixes and an arrogant attitude on the part of MSFT who is determined to be
aloof from public feedback and does nothing to accurately convey to the
public (including MSDN and Technet subscribers) if they have fixed the
multiple flaws in each build of Vista and is shipping a lot broken. System
File Checker doesn't work. It's not going to work in RC1 and it's not going
to work in Vista shipped RTM. UAC is badly implemented; it's not going to
be that much different in RC1--I know what changes have been made--and it's
going to ship as a crapfest.

Dumbest moment today: Wolf Blitzer allowing a Syrian Cabinet Minister to
compare Israel to Nazi Germany while Syria has been actively transprorting
supplying Iranian missles and weapons for Hezbullah for years to this day.
Wolf has the depth and insight, and initative to call people when they make
stupid comments of a cucumber.

Big thanks to everyone for ideas. JohnL's tip to turn off Aero did the trick.

John, is it worth trying the ATI drivers? I installed Beta 2 in June but
couldn't get dual monitors to work the right way round with ATI drivers. I
think I might wait for the next CTP and stick with XP for now.

Another thought; is your x800Pro an AGP card?

Chad, thanks for the repair suggestion and how-to. I'll certainly send a
few emails about this.

Michael

I'm glad you got it fixed. I had no idea that Aero was interferring. But
neither does any of the members of the Windows Vista team, and you have no
real way despite the bullshit about public bug reporting to let them know
and they have provided no way to let you know they have noticed or fixed the
bug. Welcome to Vista. I'll try to get an email of a team member you can
email directly since MSFT has demonstrated they have no interest in hearing
from the public and letting the public know they are working with their
bugs.

I have taken to doing my best to provide direct emails of either a Vista PM
on a team responsible for the bug since MSFT has failed to provide any
meaningful mechanism for bug reporting by the public or to someone who has
the capability to get the bug to them. I can quickly tell when someone is
not sincere about being reached, and in this setting that someone is MSFT.

You can download the MBC (the Microsoft Bug Reporting Client Tool via:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=43655 but for the public it's as
worthless as yelling at an NFL quaterback on TV on Sunday (NBC) orMonday
Night (ABC) this season.

Email this bug to (e-mail address removed)

You know that old saying "see you online"? It means nothing from MSFT.

Put your bugs in their mail box. And don't be satisfied with some
bot-esque, bot-like bullshit reply they made with their little Outlook 2007s
that go "thanks for your input yadayadayada" --Demand to know what team is
fixing it.

Ask them when they are going to fix SFC (System File Protection) if ever
because Colin who is taking on the role of the Vista ombadsman can't answer
any of this.

Good luck,

CH

Iraq and stability --chances zero--American and Iraqui deaths every day for
the rest of your life! Great job of Civil War US--you waiting for General
Lee and Abe Lincoln to show up? You're waiting to see a Confederate flag
before you admit it? Your puppit has already condemned you.

Lebanon and stability--chances zero--A peacekeeping force full of feckless
UN fighters has been in here for 28 years.

Good show Team Bush! You're on your way to a WWII but the battlefields
won't have names that are pages in large coffee table books.

I keep getting the same thing on my system and I'll try turning of Aero. I
hope there will be an official reponse from Microsoft

You'd have a much better chance getting a response from the authors of the
Federalist Papers than MSFT. The way to get MSFT to respond is to say "hey
yuppie buppies here's some money; go buy more toys."

Michael,

Yes, my x800 is an AGP card. Funny thing is... It worked perfectly with the
Beta2 bits.

I'm currently running the latest ATI drivers, but it had no effect at all on
correcting the problem.

I reported a bug, so I'm sure Microsoft will figure it out. I'm still
running what's considered "semi" recent hardware, so there should be no
reason not to support it properly.

Now, if I could just get Battlefield 2 to run.... <sigh/>

The real solution if it will let you get by after hitting enter is to disable
all account security prompts. Just do a start/help search for sepcol.msc and
you will see instructions on disabling all the user prompts... or just do
this... start/run/secpol.msc/enter/local policies/ security options and then
scroll down to the bottom and disable all the prompts. If you get a black
screen when you hit the run... hit enter again and see if it takes you into
the local security setting panel. I didnt check but you may be able to
access it in the control panel too. And you should make your screen very
bright while attemting this as well, so you can see whats going on at the
black screen.

As an added note... after you disable all the prompts you should go into the
control panel and change your account to administrator. I know it will show
you as one when you install but truth be told your never really a true admin
until you change your account manually. ie.... user prompts would never have
popped up in the first place.
