JPEG's grainy in IE 6

I have a very strange problem that I can't seem to find the answer to.

I have a custom built PC in my possesion (AMD Athlon 1000, 1 gig of ram,
Spacewalker mobo, SM Bios 2.2,Nvidia GeForce MX420 video, running XP Pro and
IE 6. All updates and patches have been installed.) The problem started
after reformatting the C drive and reinstalling the OS about a month ago.
When viewing .jpg images in the IE browser window, they appear grainy, as if
I'm running 16 color graphics. All other image types view as normal, only
..jpg are affected.

XP Pro has been laoded on this machine two different times now, from two
diferent cd's, and we have also loaded W2K on it as well, each time ending
up with the same results, grainy .jpg's in the browser window.

Anyone have a clue as to what's going on here?

Many thanks!

Sorry I don't have an answer... I have the same problem!!
It started happening the other day, after I got hit by the
bobax virus, and the exploit-verify virus. I cleaned out
the virus, deleted all cached files, but still cannot seem
to get jpegs to show up correctly. Looks like they are
way over compressed. Gifs are mostly okay, though there's
a grey box around graphics with white backgrounds :( I'm
running a Fujitsu laptop with xp home.

I hae the same problem. I travel, and use multiple
broadband connections. I cannot find anywhere in my
setting where I have control of the image rendering
quality in ie6. When I right click and save the images,
and then use the image previewer, the look fine. This is
driving me nuts. The images aren't compress they just look
compressed when viewed. I may call microsoft and find out
what's going on.
