jpeg vs. jpg

I have three XP systems. One of them insists on storing
downloaded JPEG images with the suffix .jpeg instead
of .jpg. Perhaps this is an Expolrer problem.

Any ideas?

Can you please elaborate? Where are the images coming from? This is
probably a setting in the program that you are using to save the files. I
also don't see why this is a problem - jpeg files are just as functional as
jpgs.

Here's the situation. I have three machines (2 Dell
Desktops, I Dell Laptop) all running XP (2 Home/ 1 Pro)
networked. On the two desktops when I down load images in
IE and click on the save to disk icon, a window opens
asking if I want to save the image with one of the usual
choices and having chosen .jpg, the image gets saved as
a .jpg file. On the laptop, however, given the same
choice the file is saved with the suffix .jpeg, not .jpg
and it doesn't matter if it is being stored locally or on
one of the other two machines. Viewing software doesn't
seem to have a problem with this (ACDSEE & CompuPic), but
the save dialog box doesn't show other images in the file
unless they are .jpg. It does, however, recognize
duplicate images of either persuasion.

In the grand scheme of things this is merely annoying, but
I'd like to resolve this.

You may need to do some editing in your
registry...carefully read the following article
first before proceeding:

Information About Editing the Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=256986#Topic2

====================================
".jpg extension may be incorrect in registry"

Go to...Start / Run...

Type in "regedit" (without the quotes)...OK.

In your registry editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

What is entered at "Extension"? (should be: .jpg)
(don't change anything...just observe)

Also you might check:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/pjpeg

What is entered at "Extension"? (should be: .jpg)

If the *Extensions* are incorrect, changing them to .jpg
should solve your problem.

To make the change...

Left click "Extension" to select it.

With "Extension" selected...go to...Edit / Modify...

Replace the text in the "Value data" field with
".jpg" (without the quotes)...OK.

Close the registry editor....File / Exit.
