joining XP PRO workstation to domain

Every time I go to join my XP Pro machine to the domain i
get an error on the workstation "the specified server
cannot perform the requested operation". The DNS service
is running. I am using the administrator account. Please
help.

Can you ping the domain controller by name? Any errors in your event logs?
 
Yes I can ping the domain controller by name and no I do
not see any relevant errors in the event logs.
 
Only one DC in the domain?
Have you looked at the DC's event logs?
 
Make sure that the DNS Server has the correct SRV records ij the zone
and that the Windows XP Client is configured to use that DNS Server
