Joining a new domain

Hello,

I have a new PDC w/active directory up and running: I
named the new DC the same as my existing DC, in the hopes
to make joining it effortless. But when I attempt, to
join the new domain it states that the account is already
joined (since I used the same domain name). In short:
do I need to rename my new domain to something different
or just have the client joing a workgroup and then re-
attempt to join the new domain?

thank you

Bit confused here, as I understand you created a new win2k domain and the
name of the dc is the same as that of a dc in another domain. But what are
you trying to join - "make joining it effortless". You can't have two
machines with the same name in the domain, so not exactly what you're trying
to do here, and joining a workgroup first won't change anything in regards
to the naming conflict as long as the other machine is still active.
Also are you wanting to rename your domain (which means rebuilding it) just
to get a machine with a specific name to join. Sorry, but not familar with
your setup, so need to get a bit of clarification here.
thanks

Well, in short: I had to rebuild my DC due to AD/GP-
snapin issues. So now I am in the process of "re"
joining my clients to this new PDC. Right now, I have
one test machine joined to the new domain. And was
attempting to continue the process on my desktop. Then
this weekend, disconnect the current PDC from the LAN and
start to use the new PDC I just built. I know you can
not have two PDC on the same LAN. So that is why I have
my new PDC/test machine not connected to the "real" LAN.
I have 2 switches, 1 pdc w/AD, 1 xp test machine
currently working properly on my "test" LAN.

Hope that clears up things. Also, some of the clients
profile account are employeename.domain and some are just
employeename (w/o the .domain)...will this cause issues?
Will I need to copy there profile into the new profile
created once they join the new domain?

Much Thanks

The clients will need to go to workgroup first before they're able to join
the new domain.
The user accounts show that depending on if the first logon was to local
machine or domain and shouldn't be a problem. However since they will be
logging onto a "new" domain for the first time will not have all of their
old domain settings. If the domains are different names, you can create a
trust, copy the "old" domain profiles over to the "new" domain, and give the
"new domain user account" permissions to use it when you do the copy on the
user profile tab.
