joining a domain

I'm coming across a rather unusual problem. Having joined
3 PC's (all XP) to the domain, I cannot get the 4th to
join. When using the "change" button, it reports that
the "network path not found". I created a computer
account in AD (there is only one DC) and then tried to
use the "network ID" button. After entering the required
info, it reported that it had found an account for that
computer name - do i want to use it.Clicked "yes",
entered domain admin password, then it comes back
with "cannot find domain controller".

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but as the computer account only
exists in AD, and AD only exists on a DC, then it must
have found a DC in order to verify that the computer name
exists? How can it then report that it can't find a DC to
join?

Am I mising something? - any suggestions gratefully
received.

BTW ran ipconfig - the PC has an address on the same
subnet (DHCP) and is getting the DNS address of the DC

"Network path not found" in a domain network 2

Symptom: some w2k/xp can't join the domain randomly. The DNS server is
multihomed server..

Resolution: You can find some computer browser errors on the DNS server.
Disable one of two NICs will work. More resolutions can be found in browser
Issue page.

I have the same situation as the intial post. However,
my laptop also has an embedded wireless card, no obvious
conflicts. Also, I am able to see the domain I want to
connect to, and am getting out to the internet through
the domain, yet cannot connect to it.
BTW, since www.chicagotech.net won't load, what was the
first reply trying to say? He lost me real quick. I
have two NIC's on the server, one for internet, one for
network. Disabling either is not applicable.

try this

change the 4th machine from tryingto join a domain to be a workgroup
computer.

Give it the same some bogus domain name

when it comes back saying "welcome" don't reboot

now change the computer settings from a workgroup back to become a domain
member for the domain you want to join.

this should address tihs problem. If it doesn't drop a line.

this may help. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master
SYMPTOMS: 1) Event Viewer System log shows Event id: 8021 and Description:
The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master
<PDC> on the network \device\<protocol_netcard>. 2) Event id: 8032 and
Description: The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too
many times on transport of <protocol_netcard>.
This symptom occurs because 1) your computer is a multihomed computer or
using multiple network cards in the same subnet; 2) your computer is a
master browser; 3) Your computer is running the TCP/IP protocol.
Resolutions: find the failed protocol_netcard or use browstat status (from
NT Resource Kit) to find the problem and the card. Then
1) Stop computer browser to prevents the computer from receiving computer
browse lists from other networks.
2) Remove or disable the card.
3) Unbind it from the workstation service.
4) Uncheck Client for MS Networks on the card.
