JBOD array and dodgy partition

A

Andrew Young

I used a pair of 120GB Western Digital SATA hard drives with my motherboards (an
ABIT KV7) RAID controller.

I am using Windows 2000 and both HD's are NTFS formatted, one partition each.

One HD had Windows and programs the other had data.

Recently using both HD's I tried to create a bootable JBOD array and keep my
original data, but when I eventually finished, Windows displayed both hard
drives. I rebooted and then I received an error message 'NTLoader missing'.

I then broke the array - this took about two seconds, removed HD 2 from the PC,
formatted HD 1 and reinstalled Windows.

Last night I refitted HD 2, but it isn't recognised by Windows.

Partition Magic 7 claims HD 2 is unformatted.

Windows Disk Management claims 'unknown' and 'unallocated', if I right click it
gives me the option to 'write signature'.

Using Hex Workshop (read only), I can see my data is still present, but the
first sector starts
'DB04000000000000DB040000000000004101AF36AC000000FFFFFFFF82794711' and then all
zero's.

I have found a sector starting '.R.NTFS' at 234431442 of 234441647

Using Findpart, it lists the partition on HD 1, but not on HD 2, see below:

Many thanks.

Are you certain which disk is which?

How are you booting without a primary active partition?

The Findpart output is not from "findpart all fp.txt", since there is
no search result. Do not cut output unless it is very large, since
operating system version and Findpart version number often can be
useful.

A huge great big snip

Are you certain which disk is which?

How are you booting without a primary active partition?

The Findpart output is not from "findpart all fp.txt", since there is
no search result. Do not cut output unless it is very large, since
operating system version and Findpart version number often can be
useful.

Here is the full 'findpart all' and 'findpart table', I did trim them down
earlier, I had found it much easier to read and try to understand them.

Many thanks

Andrew

To get an idea what is on disk 5, you can do:

findpart findfile 5 fp-a.txt

and mail me the file fp-a.txt. I then will cut and show interesting
parts here. The search will take some time.

From the original description I remember that it would not be possible
that the missing partition is beginning at the end of disk 4. But if
the partition was created while a JBOD was present, it would begin at
disk 4.
