Javascript problem

Cynth

I have been trying to display a page which has a URL of
javascript:popup. It automatically opens in its own small
window but I only get the writing displayed and instead
of an interactive video of a cottage, I get a white
square with a red cross in the corner.

I have tried turning off Norton Internet Security and
changing IE to allow all cookies, but nothing helps. I
have also removed Norton Internet Security and tried the
site again but when I re-installed it, it obviously had
not removed everything as I did not have to register it.
Would this have left a conflict with IE that is causing
the problem?

I am running Windows XP home with all the latest updates.

Thanks for any help given.

At what level are your "java permissions" set?

Red-X means that the component was inaccessible, either because
of an underlying HTTP error message or for some other reason.

See if you can clone that popup window with one which gives you
more control. Press Ctrl-N. Then you may be able to use
View Source and figure out why you are getting a Red-X.
(You can of course try right-clicking within the popup window
in case there is a View Source menu item there but that would be
unusual.)

To test if the there is an underlying HTTP error when you don't have
access to a packet sniffer, you can extract the URL for the image
from the source and try to open it in its own window. Provided you
do *not* have Show friendly HTTP error messages checked
(in Options, Advanced tab) you may be able to see the cause
of the Red-X.

Good luck

I have had a look at the source and it has two HTTP
addresses to do with the display of the video. One works
okay when I go into it and is just a list of HTTP
addresses, the other one is a '.zip' address as follows -
http://photos.cottages4you.co.uk/Photos/Ehouse/ehouseviewe
rholidaycottages.zip. I have not tried this one as it
asks me wheither I want to save it or run it as it must
be executable. Are .zip allowed in IE6?

Thanks for your help.

Not usually. That would be a good reason for a placeholder which
is not a Red-X but a similarly sized icon which shows 3 colored
geometric shapes. The Red-X could be due to an image file
which was supposed to represent that .zip file which was not available.

What Address (URL) do you see if you right-click that Red-X and choose the Properties menu item? FYI you can capture that text
by doubleclicking on a word in it, pressing Ctrl-a (for Select All)
and right-click, Copy.

BTW if you are asking if you should allow the zip file to be opened
or downloaded that depends on what support your OS has for that
file type. It is a supported file type in XP. Other OS might have
third-party programs such as WinZip installed to handle them.
Otherwise it would be unsupported.

The address I get is http://www.english-country-
cottages.co.uk/uce/ecc?
action=readVirtualTour&view=virtualTour&cottageId=406606.

My OS is Windows XP home and has all the updates applied.

Thanks for your help.

That's a Java applet. Perhaps you don't have Java support.
FYI MS Java originally was not in XP, then it was added in XPsp1,
then it was taken out in XPsp1a; so it is quite likely that you don't
have MS Java. Do you have Sun Java? If not visit the Sun Java
web site and install it. (FWIW I have MS Java and have never found
the need to get Sun Java. The applet seems to work fine with MS Java.
If you think you really need it I think it may even be added to XPsp2
but I'm not sure where to find it. It's not distributed by Microsoft
any more. Search others' posts for this option.)

My OS is Windows XP home and has all the updates applied.

XP does have support for .zip

Thanks for your help.

I went into the Microsoft website today and followed
their checks for Java, it seems I did not have it
installed. I then downloaded the file from the SUN site
(as you suggested) and have installed it successfully. My
Java Applet now works.

Thank you for all your help.
