[JavaScript Appliation] error message

Recently the following messages pops up when I click a link to a newspaper.
It stops me from seeing the website and the it reverts back to the last site
I was on.

Here is what it says with the exclamation inside a yellow triangle icon
displayed.
"Not Implemented
The server does not support the functionality required to fullfill this
request."

It is not consistent in behavior. This is all new. I have not changed
anything in my habits or downloads.

What can I do?
Thanks!

This sounds like a problem with the site, not your browser. Everything I
can find online regarding this error points to fixes server side, not
browser side.

In the interim, can you provide a URL for testing?

Hi Sandi,
Here are one that it just happened with and were doing it just as I copied
the link and pasted here:

It may help to clarify if these are the sites where you were clicking on links
of if these are the newspapers you were trying to link to. Or is it the case that
these sites ("newspapers") all sometimes link to other newspapers and it is
only such links which you are having difficulty with? <eg>

Therefore to help diagnose this I suggest you provide two URLs per instance:
one which is given by right-click, Properties of the page you are clicking in.
(Taking the URL from the Address bar in most cases may be equivalent but
not always.) and one which is given by right-click, Copy Shortcut on the link
you want to click on (and which presumably causes the problem symptom.)

ok.in this case, just now, I am able to go to www.csmonitor.com. But the
error message occures when I try to go to one of its article such as this one:

Right click, properties:
http://www.csmonitor.com/

Right click, copy shortcut
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0603/p11s02-almp.html

Another article in the same link:
Right click properties:
http://www.csmonitor.com/
Right click, copy shortcut on an article to another story:
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0603/p01s03-woap.html

And with the following link, I can't access the page at all:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/

There is quite a bit of Javascript being used in there for stuff like mouse actions.
I wonder if it would make any difference if you tabbed to your link instead?
For example I can get to that particular one by tabbing into the page, doing a Ctrl-f
Find for broadway, another Tab, and then an Enter. Does that make any difference?
Hmm... "tabbing into the page" may not be precise enough. Try Alt-d,F6,Tab instead.

Also, in order to see the effect of the interpreting of the script commands on the rendering
of the page I suggest you temporarily change your Security options in that zone so that
any options which are currently Enable be made Prompt where possible. Then each time
you are prompted you can safely reply Yes but the prompt will delay the rendering so you
will understand the steps of the rendering better. Also notice that both sites are using
ActiveX controls which are safe for scripting, for some reason. Tip: the quickest way
to open the Security dialog is to doubleclick on the security zone icon in the IE Status bar.
Provided you aren't overriding any custom settings of your own you would restore the
settings when you are through testing by using the dialog's Default Level button.

BTW you could also interleave any prompts for Cookies by temporarily changing your
Privacy settings too. E.g. open the Privacy Report and use the Settings... Advanced buttons
(or press Alt-V,v,Alt-S,v,P,r) There are quite a few ads with Cookies associated with them
so doing both could give you a better picture of the exact circumstances of your error message.

It's the same sort of thing. Using my suggested diagnostic there are two prompts for
scripting before any HTML is rendered. That could imply that you have a problem with
scripting.

BTW do you have any third-party programs which could be interfering with the HTML
by doing things such a trying to scrape out ads? If so, you might have to disable them
to see these sites.

Good luck

ok. You've confused me. You are much more smart about these things then me. I
have sinced learned that the links work fine on my other compter, therfore
you nor anyone else will "see" my problem. BTW: Same error messages using
Netscape and Firefox broswer. So, is there another forum I should be asking
these questions on? The two error messages "...syntax error" and ...unable
to process...." are related to my computer or a java program?

So, is there something I can delete and reinstall?

I really have not added anything that would seem to be the cause of this
problem
Thanks!

Agreed. That's why I am suggesting ways to
A) hopefully eliminate some of the Javascript calls (e.g. substituting mouse actions
with keyboard actions)
B) break down the rendering of the page into steps using Security dialog prompts.

For example, I mentioned that I see two prompts for scripting on a blank page.
If you see one or both that would refine your symptom description considerably.

BTW notice that both procedures are things that you could try on your other computer
so you would understand what parts of normal processing you are seeing without realizing
it yet. For example, you could be looking at the problem window's Title bar and Status bar
for clues. Unfortunately Windows doesn't provide any statistics on a TCP-IP connection
but you might be able to infer more about what is happening with one which is breakpointed
this way using (e.g.) netstat -asp tcp in a cmd window.

Netscape and Firefox broswer. So, is there another forum I should be asking

You could ask then what diagnostics the other browsers provide.
Note: please learn to distinguish between Java and Javascript.
They are not the same. The HTML for these pages contains Javascript
which is used to do such things as the mouse support that I mentioned.
I saw no sign of Java being used. The ActiveX control that both pages
trace relates to their use of Macromedia Shockwave Flash embedded objects.

So, is there something I can delete and reinstall?

You could try reinstalling your Scripting support.
Here's a link which Jon Kennedy points other users to for that:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/list/webdev.asp

See also this article:
<title>KB308260 - How to Troubleshoot Script Errors in Internet Explorer</title>

I really have not added anything that would seem to be the cause of this
problem

Many people are unaware of third-party programs which they have added
(or which have been added) to their systems. That's what others' comments
about malware, spyware, etc. are about.

Thanks!
Regards,

Good luck

In case anyone is curious, I finally discovered the problem. FileMakerPro Web
Companion caused it. I turned it off a now all works fine. Sigh.
