I thought I had Java on my computer ..... when I use "search" it seems there
are various Java items. Where can I check to see if my Java is enabled?

Java is referenced in Set program access and defaults

above my start box and in I.E. advanced internet
properties. You can get Sun's Java maybe with netscape
download, or by itself. Search inernet, check also Help
& Support above your start button

You can try running the Java applet at: http://segal.org/java/configuration/
(you need JavaScript on as well to do this). This will tells you which
version of Java you have (Sun or Microsoft, with version number).

Using the Internet Explorer Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Java (Sun)
or Microsoft VM you can choose which you have. Netscape uses Sun's Java
only.

If you want Microsoft Java you can get it by following instructions at:

Microsoft's Java is frozen at an older implementation but it is much faster
for GUI displays, more stable and has a better appearance due to integration
to native resources such as fonts.

Not necessarily. Animations can be run by a Java applet, but far more
commonly they are animated JIFs or Flash, and have nothing to do with
Java.
