I can't execute any java applets.
When I go to IE 6.0 tools, advanced, there is nothing about Java.
Can I download java from somewhere?

Yes, http://java.sun.com

Keep in mind that if you use any Java applet many visitors to you site will be in the same position
as you, not having the Java Virtual Machine. Best to avoid using.

Excuse my ignorance: is a Java applet different to Java script? Should one
avoid using a Java script for the same reason?

They are totally different technologies, JavaScript is ok to use with the understanding that some
users will disable it, but by default it is on.

Java and JavaScript are two very different animals.

Java is not now installed with Windows XP or IE6, unless the user downloads
and installs it from Sun's website. (Some computer manufacturers, such as
Dell and Toshiba, install Sun's JVM as part of the product, but not many
other manufacturers do.)

JavaScript comes with almost every browser, but some users turn it off
(around 10% according to stats. at www.w3schools.com )

I would avoid Java, but use JavaScript, bearing in mind the 10% who choose
to turn it off.

Thanks for clearing it up for me.
