java vm & java se V1.4.2_01 the same thing

Is Java VM and Jave SE v1.4.2_01 the same thing? When I
go to Java.com and download java VM this is what actually
downloads.

There is a Microsoft Virtual machine, which is Microsoft's version of
Java, which they enhanced, giving rise to a law suit by Sun under which
MS may no longer supply it. If you go to Start - Run and run WJView
this is the one you will be told of.

Then the JAva version 2 (I expect that is what the SE refers to from the
number) which is Sun's own Java.

You can have both on a machine - the Control Panel item that comes with
the Sun one will allow you to choose whether it or the other is the
default for a Browser to use
