Java Sound Problems

I recently installed Windows XP Home Edition and now I'm having sound
problems when Java applets play within my browser. I've downloaded
the most recent Sun Java Runtime Environment for WinXP and the latest
WinXP drivers for my sound-card, which is a Soundblaster Audio PCI 128
in a Compaq PC.

The problem is at its worst when I play a game called Diamond Mine at
Yahoo games, which are powered by Pop Cap games (www.popcap.com)..
The sound crackles, pops, and hisses. This happens when I use both
IE6 or the latest edition of the Mozilla browser. Reading through the
Yahoo games help makes no mention of problems like this, nor does Pop
Cap's webpage.

Uninstalling & reinstalling both the Java software and my sound-card
drivers hasn't helped either. Because the problem is happening with
both IE and Mozilla, I am assuming the problem might be on my end and
that something might be wrong with my Windows XP set up.

I didn't have this problem at all when I was using Windows ME on the
same PC, by the way.

Can anyone give me any help or suggestions?

Hi Kim,

If Single Player games (ex: www.zone.com/bejeweled.) don't work properly
try these steps: * Afterwards, all game sites (such as Yahoo) should work as well.

1. Click START / Control Panel / Internet Options and click on the Advanced Tab.

2. Below HTTP 1.1 is the Sun Java/ Microsoft VM section: Make sure all Java choices
are unchecked (especially JIT) and then press [OK]. You may be prompted to reboot.

3. If you don't see a Microsoft VM section then download Microsoft Virtual Machine for:
Windows 98 / Me / NT / XP from: http://www.abxair.com/software/msjavx86.exe

4. After you download Java, double-click the file to install it, reboot and then follow
the directions in Steps 1. and 2..to disable JIT compiler and other advanced options.

* Whenever you get a Java Virtual Machine Security Update from Windows Update, you
will have to follow Steps 1. and 2..to disable JIT compiler and other adv. options again.

5. Some games require Shockwave Flash which you can download from:
http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/frameset.fhtml

6. Uninstall Sun Java if the problem persists, using Control Panel / Add or
remove software. Test the game, and if it works, feel free to reinstall the
Sun version making it default for Netscape, but leave the MS versions as
default for IE as temporary measure to avoid further complications. :)
