Java is a programming language.

If a web page has portions written in Java, your must have Java installed in
your computer to use those pages.

"norton rederected me to some sun corp page to download it ......but when
the download was finished it couldnt download for some reason"

What are you saying here?

Was the download finished? Did you get any error messages? If so, what
were the error messages?

If the download actually finished, you likely downloaded an installation
program. Did you install?

What does this mean?

"........i dont know what java is and i certanily dont know what one to
download ....lol "

If you do not want Java the programming language, you could drink java the
coffee.

You need to have Java runtime installed to view some web pages. Not
all web pages, but those that use Java as part of it when they make
their pages. Just about everyone who has XP gets the Sun Corp Java
runtime file. It installs itself into Windows.

Some people do have problems getting the file automatically. You a
have misleading words - you say "when the download was finished" but
then you say "couldn't download it for some reason". I think what
might be happening is Sun is loading a downloading shell type thing,
but you can't finish it by actually downloading Java. I can't see you
actually getting it downloaded & it not installing.

Now, what firewall program do you use? You say Norton - is that
anti-virus or Firewall, or both? If firewall, try to go back to the
site, and click on your little round icon in I.E.'s toolbar that says
"Change Security Settings".. There will be two lines checked:
"Blocks adds on this site" & "blocks pop-ups on this site" Uncheck
both of them. You have to do them one at a time because the page
reloads. So now nothing is checked. Now go and try to get it again.

If that does not work, then you will need to do a manual download. I
believe somewhere on the Sun pages is a manual download. You need to
find it. It won't be the same as the one you tried.
...............Here, I will look for you.... Ok, I found it off of
one of their programmers pages. It is probably somewhere else on Sun
too, but get it here. Make sure you get the one "for end users", or
else you will end up with a programmers version.

Here is the page to get it at:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Now, go down a bit & download where it says this:
-----------------------------
J2SE v 1.4.2_04 JRE includes the JVM technology
The J2SE Java Runtime Environment (JRE) allows
end-users to run Java applications. More info...

Download J2SE JRE
-------------------------------

Ok. Now, you will probably have a choice of downloading it & saving
it, in which case you can install it later (you have to know where you
downloaded it to), or just download it & install it all at once, in
which case it probably won't save a copy to your hard drive with a
permanent file.. But you really don't need to have a copy saved if it
installs itself anyway. (Me? I always save everything & put it in a
special "downloaded & installed" folder I made).

Ok, hope that helps. You'll find with Norton Personal Firewall that
you sometimes have to do what I posted up top about un checking
security settings to be able to see/do stuff on a very small % of web
pages. Once you learn more, you can also "exclude" a particular
website from everything the firewall has in it's protection settings.
I almost never have to do that - if it is that much of a hassle you
don't want to deal with them...
