Java enabled?

I am running XP Pro with SP2. How can I tell if Java is enabled or if I
should download it form Sun?

I am wondering about this because quite a few items that may be java applets
do not display on my computer. But, some of these missing items may have
been eliminated as ads by my Zone Alarm privacy settings. Who knows?

Download Java from Sun's site...during the install, it will let you know if
you already have it installed on your machine

Just how important is it to have Java? Will it add more clutter to my
system, without real enhancements? Is it essential?

Thanks

Some webpages (web-games mostly) use Java. Although a lot are starting to
move over to using flash base games, particularly zone.com.

Due to all this hu-har over Java support on Windows, a lot of sites are
starting to move away from it now, so Sun have nicely shot themselves in the
foot.

XP does not package with virtual machine ( latest
microsoft version 3810), I have had to locate it some
time ago, and downloaded it myself and burned it to a cd
disk. It was also staged ( version 3805 first, then
updated to version 3810). If you need a copy of MS
virtual machine I can ftp a copy to you, and you can also
get the jre from java sun.

Start - Run wjview
If that is there and reports a build number you have the Java VM from
Microsoft installed. (and if the build is less than 3810 you should get
Update fro Virtual machine, Q810693)

The things you are missing are much more likely to be Java script than
Java though; you need to check settings in Internet Options, Security
and possibly Advanced

Alex,

Hope no-one minds my jumping in.....
One of my PC's (both are XP Pro SP2) has Java VM...the other appears not to
have?!?
Where can I source the MS JVM - everywhere I look I can only find Sun's - I
thought there had been an amnesty between MS and Sun allowing continued
supply of the MS JVM?

TIA.
