japanese to english os installation

Bought a new Japanese lap top (sharp, Mebius, Althlon 4, 1.1GHz) came with
Japanese xp os ready installed. Bought English XP (OEM). Attempted to
install. When installing on a clean partition or after completly reformating
the hard drive and installing with no OS the installation freezes in the
"saving setting" phase, ie within a few minutes from the end of the
installation process. Have tried another genuine disk to eliminate the
possibility that it may have been a corrupt disk, same problem. Any ideas??

How long takes this phase before to "freeze"? Are you patient enough to let
installation process to finishing itself?

waited 40 minutes before manually restarting. ran a ram test yesterday but
picked up no errors.

freezes about 30 minutes into the installation sequence, ie about 4 minutes
from the end during the 'saving settings' phase.

Make sure to disconnect all hardware peripherals before to installation.
