Jabber itself is an open source server/network that allows clients eg:
MirandaIM to connect to multiple IM protocols.

Jabber can be used beyond IM.

May I suggest you read http://www.jabber.org where you can checkout the
other IM clients ...

Oh, there are several. Personally I'd recommend Psi
