IT8 and Vuescan question

I have purchased IT8 targets for Kodachrome and Ektachome and,
following the simple instructions, created a "scanner.icc" file using
Vuescan. Simple enough...

....but I cannot detect any difference in the colors of scanned slides
using the created ICC profile versus the "built-in" option. I have
tried to view the Preview using Neutral color balance (no detectable
difference) and have scanned both with and without the ICC profile and
compared the two in Photoshop. Again, no detectable difference. I
conclude either that I am not actually getting the profile to work, or
that there is little difference between the created ICC profile and
the built-in profile.

Using Nikon LS-2000, with Vuescan 7.6.64 -- latest version compatible
with Mac OS 9.

How can I tell if the ICC profile is actually being used?

Here's some thoughts off the top of my head...

1. Scan Kodachrome IT8 target using Ektachrome profile
2. Scan Ektachrome IT8 target using Kodachrome profile
Is there a difference?

1. Using the Kodachrome IT8, a new profile by obscuring some
of the patches. This should create a "bad" profile.
2. Remove the objects that obscure and scan the IT8.
The colors should be out of whack...

Thanks...I'll give these a try.

Do a raw scan to disk. Scan from disk twice, one image with built in,
one with yor profile. Copy both images into a photoshop document in two
different layers. Set layer mode to 'Difference'. Place a levels
adjustment layer above and choose 'Auto'...

I did something very similar to this. Rather than a raw scan, I
simply scanned it twice: once with builtin and once with ICC profile.
Opened in Photoshop with two layers, did a difference and found... not
much. So I assume that the builtin is pretty good and the ICC profile
made only subtle changes (but, hopefully, good ones.)

Thanks,
