it will not power off

i am running xp and am new to it. it was working fine,
going through the motions to shut down. now for some
reason it hangs on "windows is shutting down" and wont
power off until i press the on / off button. how do i
get it to power off on its own again.
HELP!!!!

Try safe mode, see it you can power off there. If so, use msconfig to find
the faulting service:
