just bought a laptop window xp for my sister in Italy and I am trying to
change the language from english to italian but no succes. Do I have to tell
her to buy an italian version or go to the seller and strangle him,
considering that I told him that was a present for my italian sister?

You will have to buy the Italian version. If you did not specify you wanted
it in Italian - You are out of luck.

You may have told the seller it was a present for your Italian sister, but
you didn't tell the seller you needed an Italian version of Windows XP.

Strangle yourself?

Windows XP is written in specific language versions, therefore one
cannot change it from one language version to another. You'll need
to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP in the language version
you desire, reformat your drive and install it "clean".

Or if you have an available empty drive or partition, you can install
another "Full Version" of Windows XP in a different language version
and create a dual-boot configuration.

A good third-party partitioning program is Partition Magic 8.

Sorry to say that you (or she) will have to buy an Italian version. If you
bought the laptop from one of the large vendors, I'm not surprised that he
didn't know that Windows comes in language-specific versions and you can't
convert.

You cannot upgrade or convert from one language version of the OS
to another, so you'll have to purchase and use the full version of
WinXP (in whatever language you want) to perform a clean installation.
