Issues with WinXP system Restore...

I

Ismael

Hello everyone,

I am using WinXP Pro. I was wondering if I installed a driver or a program
or made user setting changes and it caused problems with my system will a
system restore bring back my computer to an exact state it was before the
installation of the driver or program or changes to my user settings? I've
noticed that after a system restore rollback there are still files and
folders of the program I tried to install. Why is this? Is there a good
website that explains how the system restore rollback and backup work. What
get restored and what does not get restored in a system restore rollback?

Thanks to all who reply,

Ismael

Hi Ismael,

See here for a description of System Restore:

System Restore monitors a core set of files and folders, along with most
of the registry. Only these monitored files and folders will be
restored. System Restore will do a good job restoring from a faulty or
unwanted driver. Installed applications different story. When a system
is rolled back to a point before an existing application was installed,
only the the monitored file and folder will be removed and the remaining
files are left behind. All registry entry's will be gone. This will
cause the application not to function. And in some cases, can also cause
the uninstall and reinstall process of the partially removed application
to fail. This is why it is recommended to uninstall any applications
installed after the restore point you will be restoring to.

Here's a list of files and folders System Restore monitors.
