issue with display modes in normal XP mode

I have run into a problem I never thought would even be possible to happen, but I guess in this crazy electronic world, the impossible is possible. For some reason in normal mode with XP, the resolution stays as 4 bit 800X600, and doesnt allow me to change that. However, going into safe mode, I DO have control to change the resolutions to 16 and 32 bit with very high resolution values (1280x1024), keeping in mind that this is safe mode. It seems to me that thru some strange unfortunate miracle, the OS had mixed up allowing which resolutions to go to which mode, in effect switching the normal mode resolutions with the one in safe mode.... strange isnt it, Video card is NVidia Geforce which i doubt had any initial problems, I was originally troubleshooting some other problem which I knew I could fix, and on one go, chose the option to revert to the last known good configuration that worked, and when windows loaded, i landed on the new problem i just described. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Not strange at all. In safe mode windows loads generic drivers for video and
sound, not you nvidia drivers. This is why the bit and resolutions look ok.
Then in normal mode your nvidia video drivers are loading and something is
wrong with them. Try updating your nvidia drivers.
