The OS is XP Pro with SP-2
I cannot send email when I click a link on a web page that is marked
mailto:<address>
The message that comes back is "Could not perform the operation because the
default mail client is not installed properly."
A search through the KB only found KB182985. This does not fit the
parameters of the link.
The configuration in "Set Program Access and Defaults" is set to Custom.
The "Choose a default e-mail program" is set to "Use my current e-mail
program"
The box beside "Outlook Express" is checked.
The advice I got from the MS-MVP OE/WM on the OE newsgroup did not work
because it could not be implemented.
I could go to Set Program Access and Defaults and set the email program to
Outlook Express. And I could set the radio button from custom to Microsoft
Windows.
What may be the real problem here is that although I set both choices and
then select OK and exit that panel, when I reopen the Set Program Access and
Defaults panel the radio button choices have reverted back to Custom and Use
my current e-mail program.
There is no other e-mail program in use. Outlook is installed as part of the
MS OFFICE suite but it is not in use and does not show up in "Add/Remove
Programs" or in Task Manager as a running process.
I expect that the mailto: problem would be resolved if the choices in Set
Program Access and Defaults could be made to "stick.
Help is solicited.
