Is vista worth it?

No - Run, don't walk from Vista. It isn't ready for prime time right now.
Wait till the Service Pack comes out then revisit the question.

Why? Just to have the "newest and shiniest OS?" If your current
operating system is meeting all of your computing needs, there's no real
reason to change your operating system.

How old is the computer you're thinking of upgrading? Have you run
Vista's Upgrade Adviser to get a feel (it's not 100% foolproof) for
what, if anything, will need to be done to get Vista to run on the system?

Considering I use XP, Vista, and Ubuntu. It is a matter of personal
preference. If you are a casual computer user,(browsing the web, email,
casual gaming) and your computer can support Vista then I would do a clean
install of Vista. Power users tend to stay away from new operating systems
until they become more stable. If your a power user then stick with XP.
Ubuntu is fun to play with and I use it as an internet kiosk for my kids and
it works great. I personally like them all. To answer your question is that
there is no real answer only personal opinions. Best way to find out is to
try it or setup a dual boot system. But remember these are just my personal
opinions.......

Just a note Bruce, it seems as though the Vista Upgrade advisor will only
run on XP SP2, or at least that's what it had told me when I tried to run
it on an XP SP1 box.

The OP didn't state what OS he would be upgrading from.

FWIW, IMHO, don't bother if it costs you more than $1 ($0.50). I had a WinME
box (don't laugh) that ran fine for 7y until it went toes up and I had to
get a new box. Didn't want Vista but the shop couldn't/wouldn't sell me an
XP box.The new Vista box (replaced once, reloaded once in two weeks) is
perceivably slower than ME (still laughing?) in spite of 3x cpu speed and 2x
RAM. WOW is ho hum at the best, WMP is user unfriendly. Compatibility
doesn't make any software perform.... M$ proudly proclaimed they have
removed "Start" from the Start orb to avoid confusing folk. (WOW)

As always YMMV,

Is it worth upgradeing to vista?

Probably not. It may work for you and it may not - seems to be no more
than an even shot. I'd advise waiting for at least SP1 - much better
chance of success by then. You might also want to consider what your
reasons for switching might be - what real advantage would it hold for you
if it worked?

I always like to try new things and thats why I bought it. Its nice to look
at - colorful, cute graphics etc. I haven't had any problems with freezes or
anything like that. The user interface for many of the things I am used to
in XP has changed and that takes a little getting used to - especially for a
66 year old. Ha. It cost me $139 for the program (Vista Business - on
Ebay) and I decided to upgrade my computer to make the Vista perform better.
I upgraded to an AMD dual core 4400, 2 gigs of Cosair Ram, an Nvidea GEforce
7600GS video card, A PC Chips mother board and a 150gig Western Digital SATA
hard drive. I also bought a new CoolerMaster case (just for the looks) and
swapped the powersupply from my old one. Total for all the hardware was
$490. (kept my old screen, keyboard and mouse.) Everything works very well
and I have no complaints. I am running Office 2003 on it, free AVG
anti-virus, Vista Master (for tweaking - reg. clean etc.) Utorrent (oops was
I supposed to say that) and photoshop.

Since you have given no details of your system or how it will be used,
it is impossible for anyone to give you a definitive answer.
If anyone does give a definitive answer base on no facts presented by
you, they should probably be best ignored since their advice is
obviously not based on facts but more likely an emotional response
based on their own prejudices.

What is in Windows Vista you want or need?
What feature does your current operating system not do that Vista can
and you want.

Most people do not need to upgrade to Windows Vista since Windows XP
performs well and will probably continue to be supported for the next
several years.
Most should wait until purchasing new hardware and get Vista at that
time.

You should have continued shopping for what you wanted since Windows
XP computers are easy to find as Windows 9X were at this point in the
early part of Windows XP release.

That shop seems like a good one to avoid since they seem unwilling to
work for their customers.

A question alias, are you ubuntu's marketing department? Cause I think they
need to hire someone else... You do a pretty bad job.

Btw, I installed ubuntu (not from your advice)... and with everything I
wanted to do, I had to use the terminal window to fix it... Thats after I
looked up how to fix it on web pages (because obviously everyone has the
same issues). Do you expect my grandmother to be able to do that? She has
enough problems with understanding how to use a keyboard properly.

I think you should go talk to a brick wall, cause its the only one that will
listen to you.

No, just a happy user. Ubuntu rocks and I want the whole world to know
about it out of the goodness of my heart.

I don't snort or belch enough?

Maybe you could be a good grand daughter and help her.

So, brick wall, is Vista worth it?

I was just thinking to myself as I read this thread... "upgraded" to Vista?
Nope.... NOT an upgrade.. I had Vista forced on me because an original PC
failed in warranty and the replacement was now only supplied with Vista.
What a mess! I grant that there are some nice bells and whistles and the
added underlying security is a great advance, but was there really any need
to destroy the tried and tested familiar UI of, say, XP for the unintuitive
and muddled mess that is Vista? Dialogs that were simple, useful and obvious
in XP (and earlier versions) are now a convoluted and obscure mess. Who on
earth 'designed' the ghastly Start Menu arrangement? The fast, attractive
and easy to use XP user menus are now a dull and awkward shambles and I have
yet to discover how to customise them for each user. They don't seem to be
in the profile...
There are little snags and problems like this one, daily and it is wasting a
lot of my time sorting them out.

One gets the impression that many familiar features from XP have now been
chucked in as an afterthought, and many things seem to be missing
altogether. It's horrible! On the same (latest) hardware it's also
distinctly slower. I really think MS have missed the mark bigtime is
releasing this version. Aero and the sidebar could have been implemented
without redesigning all the dialogs! Even the useful and simple WLAN icon is
now useless.. one has to click through dialogs just to see the signal
strength! Why change it from the way it was before?

I wonder how much it will cost businesses worldwide in lost time as staff
struggle with Vista. No company IT director with any sense would try to
implement Vista as it is now.

I won't even go into the driver issue.. I have bugs and niggles all over the
shop, all driver related. I could in all honesty never recommend Vista as it
is now. Stay with XP or Win2000! Vista is a classic example of what happens
when "change for change's sake" occurs.

Having been a Windows user ever since the old 286 days, every release was a
major step forward, culminating in XP. This is the first step backwards! and
the first time that, within minutes of using it, I thought wooaaah... what's
wrong here?... this isn't good... that's horrible.... where on earth has---
gone?... why doesn't that work as expected... and so on.

JMHO J :-)
