is this a virus?

My computer (XP SP3) has started doing the following things:

running the calculator
running Media Player
Running empty searches
Going on "standby" (no standby is set)
opening the start menu

It does these things periodically, not all at once, and for no reason
that I can see.

Is this a virus?

AVG reports no virus. However these behaviours did start about when I
upgraded AVG (free) to the current version.

It sounds more like your mouse or keyboard is wonky. Are they wireless?
Replace the batteries and/or try with non-wired peripherals. Near any other
wireless mice/keyboards? I had a client with a case like yours. He was
completely freaked out about his computer being compromised. It turned out
that the employee in the next room had the same model wireless
mouse/keyboard and the first guy's computer was picking up signals from it.
