Peter

Hi Guys
Im running a p4 with xpsp1 also running Nortons Anti virus2005 and Nortons
Firewall 2005 which have just been put on also adware and spybot as well.
Now the problem Im having is that nearly every time I turn on the pc I keep
getting a (suppose i call it a flash screen ) and looks identicle to the
opening screen of a program called "Mirc" As my pc has been formatted
recently this program hasnt been loaded at all. I have a feeling that its
some sort of virus or trojan as it doesnt do what Mirc would do but Nortons
doesnt pick up on it. Were do I go from here in stopping it.
Has anyone heard of someone having this problem at all.
Thx guys
Cheers

Hi David
Ran the system through McAfee, symantec, and f secure, none of thes showed
anythin. I also tried booting up again and there it was again
Now what, as I said its mainly at start up

Now I'm not sure it is a virus, worm or Trojan.

1) Download the following item...

Adaware SE (Free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

2) Update Adaware with latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible
5) Using Adaware SE, perform a Full Scan of your platform and clean/delete
any parasites found.
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

David, please think about a second time if it's really necessary quoting
everytime (even in the SIG area) what the OP wrote/asked? This example
demonstrates if you answer directly to Peter's question, Peter answers
"will do" in this case with your "SIG quoted" question of himself(!)
absolutely unnecessary (because it is his own question he should know)
AND unnecessary additionally transfered readable into the body text and
there additionally in typically in the form of a false configured manner
(carriageretutn/linefeed) of his OE :-( This way as a final result we
get growing bandwidth and the postings become more and more unreadable.

Remark: What I say should only be a kind recommendation (I'm not a NG
"police" or want one to be) for thinking about what how to quote general
(only the absolutely necessary parts) and your "special" quoting in your
SIG part.

THX for your kind understanding and exsuse my bad English also, but
English only is my 4th foreign language).

I can't see a reason to filter that post content in my reply in any way shape or form.

I don't see a necessity and in a web based view (e.g., Google Groups), the question and
answer are all there. You use a News Client and don't appreciate what it is like to view a
post via a web front-end. Try it.

bandwidth...

I don't see a necessity and in a web based view (e.g., Google Groups), the question and
answer are all there.

if you trimmed the quote so that only the info necessary to maintain
context was left (as suggested by rfc1855) you'd still have the
question and answer right there..
You use a News Client and don't appreciate what it is like to view a
post via a web front-end. Try it.

google groups still has a threaded view (though it's not the default)
so over quoting is not necessary... and even without the threaded view,
proper quote trimming still provides the context you want to maintain
without the burden of deeply nested full quotes potentially developing...

not that this discussion will go anywhere - it never does... nice try
with the new google groups angle, though...

David, for a single posting you are right. But: unnecessary fulquoting
(and more than often additional xposted into several NGs) becomes more
and more common behavior of millions(!) and millions of daily posters
worldwide - and this way in summary concerns bandwidth hog. The summary
makes it! Beside of the fact that this posting behavior additionally
makes threads/NGs more and more unreadable. Check this NG and others
what quoting behavior take place. More than often one is posting only
"Thanks" with unnecessary huge quoting, for example. So it's a good
idea, especially for "regulars", to give all the newbies reaching the
NGs daily a good example. That is one reason for the welknown
recommendation: first "learn to quote".

it does when everybody is doing it... everyday... in every article they
post...

wasting bandwidth is like littering... you figure your single candy bar
wrapper doesn't really matter, but when you scale it up to account for
every instance you're responsible for and every instance everyone else
is responsible for it gets to be quite an issue...

no usenet article is an island unto itself...
