Is there still a root fille limit

Back in the day, I learned that you don't use the root directory for
files.

It seemed like, at the time, the limit was 256.

Has that restriction been changed?

Nope, no changes, the limit has always been based on the file system in
question. BUT if you use NTFS, you will have trouble reaching the limit.

The limit for FAT16 is 512 entries in a directory. For FAT32 the
limit is 65,534 directory entries. Each file or folder requires at
least 1 directory entry and more if long file names (longer than 8+3)
are used.

It is mostly a matter of housekeeping - better organization and easier
to find things - that makes it a good idea to keep the root directory
relatively clean.
