Hi:

I have the following PC:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 1700 MHz (17 x 100)
Motherboard: MSI 845E Max2 (MS-6398E) (6 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 CNR, 3 DIMM, Audio)
Motherboard Chipset: Intel Brookdale i845E
System Memory: 256 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type: AMI (06/18/02)

My question is -- I want to buy a 500GB HDD to install on it -- will it work
with it and is there a limit for an HDD for me?

Youre buying a monster hd, yet you only have 250mb of memory ? priorities?

Sorry, but I couldn't find WIndows 2000 ng. I didn't say in my post that I
will also upgrade the memory, did I? Also this PC is used as video monitoring
station, that is why such a size.

So going back to my original question -- will that "monster HDD" work with
my system?

Nothing on the main page for this board, but you can download the manual and
search using the key word LBA. If search turns up nothing the you will need
to read the manual page by page to see if there is any mention of drive size
limitations. Based on the date of the BIOS you are just on the edge of when
48Bit LBA (large drive support) started to be incorporated on PCs.
See;
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=311

As DL said Memory, 256MB is way to little in most cases. Adding another 128
or more will give you a noticeable speed improvement

Hey, THANKS A LOT! I couldn't find anything in the manual either. Here's the
closest I could come up with:

On-BoardIDE
An IDE controller on the ICH4 chipset provides IDE HDD/CD-ROM with
PIO, Bus Master and Ultra DMA66/100 operation modes.
Can connect up to four IDE devices.
ATA133 RAID supported by Promise PDC20276.

I also looked in the BIOS and here's the settings for the current HDD:

ST3120023A
Max Capacity: 120GB
LBA Mode: On
Block Mode: On
Fast Programming I/O Modes: 4
32bit Transfer Mode: On

Does this mean that my motherboard supports this LBA? I'd really appreciate
your help!!!!

This is what I could find, it says 48bit LBA is supported for 845 chipset
and ICH4.
Identify your chipset:

More Chipset info:

Intel Accelerator may be required:

Promise PDC20276
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=132740
But I'd check with Promise Technologies to verify. And remember it's a RAID
controller so a single drive connected to this may not be allowed.
