In Windows Mail is there anyway to view your contacts as a list on the left
side of the preview plain like in the old outlook express days?

No, there's not.
Since contacts are stored in a folder, you can leave the folder open, or
there's a sidebar gadget that you can use.

But if you want to see them simultaneously, doesn't that reduce
the available screen width for reading emails?
Seems like a poor trade-off.

Not really, unless you want to go to the trouble of narrowing down
your Windows Mail pane so that you can fit a Contacts pane alongside.

The preferred way to start a new email in Windows Mail is:
1. Click the Create Mail button.
2. Click on To.
3. Select recipient(s).
