Is there any way to make a XP Pro machine a file server on a peer to peer
network other than simple file sharing?

I've got someone who says it can be done.

Thanks

You can disable simple file sharing, which lets you define access
control lists for each shared disk and folder. Ron Lowe and I have
written a web page with details:

XP Pro is limited to 10 concurrent connections, so it depends on how many
people are on your network.

I tried your web site and the instructions found in the site.

After following the instructions I could not apply specific permissions to
the shares.
After looking at the properties for the share in MMC " shared Files " it
showed me that the client computer was a guest on the XP Pro machine.

I suspect that you didn't disable simple file sharing on the computer
that owns the shared disks or folders.

What exactly happened when you tried to apply specific permissions to
the shares? If there were error messages, what did they say?

Sorry that I didn't get back sooner. I maid a slight mistake in reporting my
problem.

I do have simple sharing off.

But I am still getting file not acessable and it is kinda of random.
I can acess some but not all

I did notice that in MMC it is the sessions section where it shows me that I
was a guest. Have done a little reading and found that if the XP Pro box does
recognize the user or machine it forces a guest log on. Maybe I am needing to
get the client accounts in the XP Box differently.

I have typed the user accounts into the XP Pro box. is their a way to export
or import these accounts to the XP Pro Box?

Thanks for all of your help. You Guys are super.

When simple file sharing is disabled on XP Pro, users who access XP
Pro over the network should validate as themselves, not as Guest.

Create matching user accounts on XP Pro and the computers that access
it, with the same user name and password.

I'm sorry, but I don't know of any way to export or import user
accounts.
