Is there an Excel File size limit?

I know there is a limit to the number of columns (256)
and rows (about 64,000) in a single Excel spreadsheet.
But is there a limit to the number of worksheets in a
file or the total size of a single Excel file? I have a
very complex Excel 2000 workbook I wrote that has several
hundred linked worksheets that total over 50MB in size
for the file. If I open another similar Excel file that
is about 40MB, Excel hangs even though I have nearly a
gigabyte of memory (I had thought Excel file size was
only limited by the amount of available memory). If I
open a new session of Excel and then open the second
workbook, both programs run fine except if I try to link
or copy/paste between them - which causes Excel to
crash. Is this an Excel limitation?

Number of sheets is limited by available memory, if you search help for
[Excel specifications and limits] you'll see it there among other things

Yes but what that does not tell you is that Excel has its own definitions of
"available memory", which vary depending what you are trying to do and which
Excel version you are using.
