Is there a way to install Windows XP from a non-bootable device?

0x7b errors at installation are almost always caused because the setup
program doesn't have the necessary drivers to communicate with the drive
controller. The service pack level of the installation cd may make a
difference as to why one cd works and another one or the floppy diskette
set doesn't.

Ahh, hmm. I think the last attempt was with English Windows Media Center
2005 on this test machine. I don't remember if this came with service
pack or SP0. I will have to try Chinese one again.

Heh, now I am stuck at entering correct keys. Maybe you know the answer.
Since I use French and a PC104 English keyboard, pressing M gives me a
funky symbol which I don't want. How do I type in English key so I can
input the correct key. :(

I don't have a clue as to your keyboard and why it isn't typing the
expected characters. Perhaps you have an Alt-Gr key or something
similar and the key is activated.

Yeah, Alt-Gr didn't work. COworker told me it was alt and shift keys.

Hello!

I am having problems in installing a new Windows XP (Simplified Chinese,
don't think language matters) from a non-bootable CD (looked like it is
a copied installer layout).

I tried using an old DOS boot disk (Windows 95) and running Windows XP's
setup.exe, but it says it is not a valid DOS boot disk. I tried booting
up an installed Windows XP, and running the CD's setup.exe but was
denied to install it.

Are there any ways? Thank you in advance. :)

Try this. I haven't used this method myself, but I'm told it works.

Use a Windows 98 boot disk. Boot to the floppy and load the CD
support. At the command prompt, change to the drive letter associated
with the CD-ROM device. Then type: \i386\winnt.exe

Hope this helps.
