Is there a user limit to Windows 2000 Professional?

I get a strange problem with one user - files can take ages to open and save
back to a PC using Win2000Pro being used as a files server.

Is there a limit to how many users can be connected to share files at the
same time?

Greetings --

Win2K Pro, like all Microsoft workstation operating systems,
allows up to 10 simultaneous connections. If you need more, install a
server OS.

Thanks for this ... how easy is it to migrate to Windows Server on a Windows
2000 Pro PC?

Extreme slowness in opening and closing shares bears no relation to the
connection limit of 10 on Windows 2000 Pro.

Look elsewhere for a solution.

ok thanks ... can you suggest where to look? I've already spent weeks on
this forum looking for a solution and posted queries direct on Office
forums.

Greetings --

Well, it depends on what you mean by "migrate." There is no way
to upgrade a workstation OS to a server OS, so you'd need to format
the hard drive and perform a clean installation of Win2K Server, but
doing so isn't much different from installing Win2K Pro.

Watch the task manager display.
Use some performance counters.
Download a network packet sniffer.

Try to find out what is going on inside the computer or network when you
open/save to a share. Identify where the bottleneck is occurring.

Hi,

I carried out a thorough investigation of the network cabling connections
etc to eliminate the network hardware, I found no problems. I then removed
the client Pc and replaced with a spare one and now two weeks later we have
not had a repeat of the problem - so I'm now suspecting the old PC which was
a laptop and I'm going to rebuild it for another purpose.

Thanks to those that helped with this, I learnt alot during the proces.
