I have a lot of gas receipts, meal receipts, etc.
Is there a template that er can enter these, and have the totals go into a
tax form by category? For example, automobile, entertainment, etc.?

Sure - Quicken, Microsoft Money, Peachtree, any of a lot of programs
written for just this purpose.

Reinventing such complex elaborate programs in Access would be
reinventing the wheel. Spend a few bucks and get the advantage of many
developer-years of fine tuning, right out of the box.

Sure if you have an extra $100 and lots of time to set up accounts, learn
passwords, etc. I guess paper and pencil is the best for me. "Creating
Spreadsheets and Charts in Excel" by Maria Langer shows how to put together
a nice clean budget based on tax categories and you actually learn how to use
the program.
