I have used Scanreg.exe in the old days for WIN9x systems
and was wondering if there is a similar utility for XP.
Also, is there a utility that will clean or possibly
defrag the registry for XP?

Thanks...

BLUE, there are progs out there. But, be VERY careful.
Start with downloading DUSTBUSTER. Next SPYBOT. If this
fails load JV16 (shareware). It is extremely powerful and
you must be ever so careful. XP offers diskclean and
defrag. However, you can go back, since you ran 9x to
Run>dskchek. This has pulled me out when all else froze.
Set a restore before you start on any of these.
Good Luck

XP has its own defragmentation utility under start, programs,
accessories, system tools.

As a backup, frequently recommended here is erunt.zip, a 575K
freeware utility. Saved me once from a reinstall when system restore
failed. There is also an optimizer included as a separate utility,
although to be honest I've never seen any difference after using it.

The backing up aspect is done by System Restore, which backs up the
registry and changes to other system/program files in a 'restore point'
each day.

There is not any equivalent of Scanreg /Opt or /Fix, but the XP registry
is much larger anyway and incremental bloat is proportionately less
problem

ERUNT, which is a free supplementary registry backup comes with
NTRegOpt, which will do a compaction, though as I say to not much
relative effect:
