The reason is most likely that the readers of your
post have never come across a problem like this.
Rather than saying "Sorry, can't help you", they
choose to remain silent. You should, of course, repeat
your original post so that potential respondents can
see it immediately instead of having to dig for it in this
very busy newsgroup.

There is a lot of malware about and your registry might
have suffered some damage from such a program. A
work-around might be to use the System Restore function
to bring the system back to a point before the problem
started.

Dear Sir/Madam
Sorry to hear that our customer service has failed you, and in particular
that it has been three days without there being any reply to you enquiry.
I have brought this to the attention of my supervisor.
I have no idea what the supervisor will do about it as they are currently on
their lunch break.
On their return, I will bring your enquiry to their notice again.
We do try and maintain a quality customer service in these newsgroups but
volume traffic and technical problems beyond our control, do effect this
service.
I trust you will be patient with us and calmly wait whilst you are
continually ignored.

You appear to be under the impression that Microsoft
staff answer posts in these newsgroups. Nothing could
be further from the truth - just about all replies come from
volunteers who are prepared to share their experience.

As someone that assists with a couple of telecoms newsgroups, I am well
aware that this is a peer-to-peer group but with a slight difference in that
many of you have chosen to become MVP.

Original post

I am running XP Home Edition SP2 and for 10 months everything is fine
[within reason]

In the past few weeks, no matter what screensaver I use, when I move the
mouse to deactivate the screensaver, the last application I was using -
closes.

If I have 4 or 5 browser windows open, the last one closes. This also
happens with word, excel etc. With Firefox, as it needs to ask to close
windows, the confirmation window is there which I have to click twice.

If no windows or applications were open when the screensaver activated, then
upon return to the PC, the box is there asking for confirmation to standby,
turn off or restart windows.

The software is totally up to date.

I remember one thread, don't know if it was yours, that was
eventually answered by MS's KB article that talks about screen
saverr failures when using MS's wireless mouse on some versions of
Windows and some PC makes.

This is also incorrect. You don't "choose" to become an MVP -
it is a recognition by Microsoft for professional experience.
You can't apply to become one and you don't get paid for
being one.

As someone who has chosen to assist others that are without your skills or
dedication - do you have any thoughts on a resolution to my problem ?

I don't qualify technically nor am I inclined to be an MVP, but I
thought it was something one applies for, passes a competency test,
and signs a NDA. How does someone become a MVP, unless they're an
employee or MS somehow recognizes in them the makings of a good
MVP?

Christopher,

Hopefully no one in this particular newsgroup "chooses to become an MVP" as
you say. I for one see no evidence of this.

Please don't put words into my mouth - it does not
help your cause. I've made a suggestion in my first
reply - see if it works.

Christopher - Being snippy about the fact that no one currently reading the
groups has an answer for you is not useful. I read your problem on the 13th
and I read it again today. I have no idea what is causing your problems and
would want to see the machine before diagnosing it, which is why I didn't
answer you. I'm sure other people have similar reasons.

Since you help out in technical newsgroups, I'm sure you know all about
troubleshooting, although you didn't tell us what you've already done.
Presumably you've already asked yourself the First Question Of
Troubleshooting - What changed between the time things worked and the time
they didn't? You might want to share the answer here in order to get
focused help.

If you don't get an answer from one of the many volunteers who recognize the
problem or have a suggestion for your troubleshooting, you can always pay
for tech support locally.

Good luck in your endeavors,

Malke

"Don't Panic"

Thanks for your response

The only changes that have been made from the time it worked to the time it
does not are MS security and MS Office updates. Additionally, AVG
anti-virus updates have been installed.

I have added no new software, no hardware and frequently scan for viruses
and spyware [Lavasoft]. I do have a new wireless router but my PC connects
wirelessly to that and no software was required.

Although I was not unduly surprised that this happened with a complex
screensaver - although it had been working for some months without
problems - it now happens with any and all of the screensavers that come
bundled with XP.

I have purchased and run Registry Mechanic from PC Tools Software but this
did not unearth any errors.

I'm always willing to give advice if I have any experience in the subject.
In this case, I'm just not familiar with screensavers and it's settings, not
to mention a quirky problem I've never experienced.

Anyway, here's my two cents. I've come across a thread that appears similar
to Christopher's problem. Though there is another issue involved, it seemed
to correct the poster's similar program shutdown problem. Worth the read.
Good Luck.

If not employees, how does MS decide the "compentent" [sic] of
prospective MVPs if they cannot observe them on the job and they do
have have to pass a test ala MS Professional?
