maximum is 1024 characters per cell. You can extend this by manually
entering linebreaks with ALT+ENTER

Formulas have a restriction of 1,024 characters
 
In fact, a cell will hold 32,767 characters.

What mezhr refers to is Excel's default of showing or printing only 1024
characters.

The ALT + ENTER will expand the 1024.
