Is there a good keyboard shortcut to changing text color?

I'd like to change "in typing stride" from black text to red text and back to
black again in MS Word 2003. Is there a way to do this just using the
keyboard, I don't want to have to move to the mouse.

No, but you can easily record a macro and assign it to a keyboard shortcut:

Or you could define a character style that is just Default Paragraph Font +
Color: Red and assign it to a keyboard shortcut. Ctrl+Spacebar will return
you to Black/Auto when you need it.

Dear Anne and Suzanne,
Thanks for your tips. I ended up assigning a 'red' and a 'black' macro --
things are progressing much faster now.
By the way, Suzanne, I had a little bit of trouble with your idea (I never
did enjoy playing with styles). When I applied the style, the entire
paragraph that I would be typing would turn red. And cntrl-space didn't
return it to black. Then again, I probably goofed, knowing my antipropensity
for playing with styles.

You have to make sure you have created a character style rather than a
paragraph style and that you apply it only to the selected text.
