Is the upgrade worth it?

It's a good point... I wouldn't have spent the $ on the XP3200+, it's
blatantly overpriced, especially over the 2400+ he already has.

Interesting points...I can still cancel certain items of my order, hehe.
I'll have a look and see...

Would I need certain RAM (speed?) and mobo to run a AMD64? I'm not that
knowledgable on this technology.

I think they primarily run the RAM at 200MHz, so your PC3200 should be
perfect.

You'd just need a suitable motherboard processor... if you can still swap
them, it's certainly worth looking into.

Done! Cancelled my order and went for the Athlon64 3000+ with some fancy
Asus board that got a whole spread of good reviews. Thanks for the advice
guys!

OverKlocker

Im in the process of upgrading my PC. This is my current set-up:

AthlonXP 2400+
Elite Systems K7S5A Mobo
Radeon 9700 non-pro
1 Gig DDR 2100
Audigy 1

I have ordered:

AthlonXP3200+
MSI K7N2 Delta
1 Gig DDR 3200

Now, is it really gonna be worth my while adding a 9800 XT to that list?
Money isn't a massive issue, I'm willing to shell out the cash if I can get
a significant performance boost.

If I go from a 9700 to a 9800XT am I really going to see a big difference? I
see the clock rates are about 33% higher on the XT...thats on paper though,
does that translate well into real performance?

Im a big gamer and play the likes of SWG and will be looking to play new
stuff like Far Cry, Doom 3 etc.
my 9700pro still works great with my setup. i would say that if you
have someone to buy yer 9700pro to offset the cost of the xt, that may
help the switch. you could also get a 2500+, 200fsb setup to also even
things out if yer on a budget. although you would prob need a better
heatsink.

System Specs:
Asus A7N8X Del 2.0 (1007 Uber bios)
2500+ @3200+ (2.24 Ghz) 203 fsb (still playing with it)
Thermalright SLK-800(A) (with AS3 and 80mm Denki fan)
1Gb Corsair pc3200 CL2 (2 sticks, with platnium heat spreaders)
Radeon 9700 Pro retail w/Aluminum ram sinks
160gig Maxtor SATA 7200rpm 8mb (XP Home SP1)
Optorite dd0203 DVD burner
Artec 52x24x52 cdrw
Lian-Li pc10 (with window and light mod)
550W Antec True Power PSU
Phoebe v.92 pci modem
onboard sound
onboard nic

Dammit!

What happened to an AThlon 64 3000+????? Not exactly a major price
difference! As for the card... wait two months. You know it makes sense!

Just an opinion

Yes!!!!

You will never regret the below purchase! The Athlon 64 does function with
PC2100 memory... . One warning: If you do decide to ever get some very
fast Ram, say Cas 2.0 nice timings etc, be aware that the motherboard may
not be able to run at the rams top spec.

I have the MSI K8t Neo board with OCZ Cas 2 stuff. Managed to figure out
what the hell it all means from a few suggestions here and Toms Hardware,
but the motherboard will NOT stay stable at Cas 2.0. Updated to the latest
Bios and still no. Just a thought. A couple of reviews have said that the
memory thing is quite scary and that a buyer should check the compatibility.

Getting the heatsink and fan on is quite a lot of fun!

There is no point in buying a 32bit chip now, unless you want to stay with a
Pentium! (Hell no) (Just my opinion! No need to scream at me for anything
I have put above!)

Athlon 64 3000+
Saphire 9800 Non-Pro overclocked a bit
512Mb OCZ Cas2.0 ram
3 x WD 80Gb Hard Drives 7200 8Mb Cache
Herc Game T XP SOund
450w PSU
DVD +-rw

Want a WD Raptor 10,000rpm drive! (Slobber £86)

Glad to have saved your ass...

The AMD3200 is not even faster than the AMD3000... maybe a hair...
Anything over 2800 is just not worth it.

Now you have an upgrade path.

good luck!
