Nowdays...Norton is pretty much a piece of bloated junk

Most of the free virus checkers are better

such as Free-Av , Avast or AVG7.5

more good, free utilities:

Spy Bot search and destroy

Lavasoft AdAware

In my view, and that of many of us here, Norton Anti-virus is the *worst*
anti-virus product on the market. There are several better alternatives, and
many of them are freeware.

I use the freeware Avast, and like it very much.

Here's a link to the free Avast AV that I use [along with a free Sygate
firewall] ....

http://www.avast.com/eng/desktop_protection.html

i downloaded avast but can't tell if it has the firewall in it or not!

Sorry, if I mislead you... Avast is JUST an Anti-Virus program. You
need a separate firewall program to go with it. I mentioned Sygate
because it's free, and has worked fine for me for years, but there are
others you can use.

I can't get over all the typos I've made today!!! The line above should
read "Sorry, I misled you"!

i wonder if my road runner isp (thru time warner) provides a firewall...and
what about the firewall in windows xp?

When you uninstall Norton, be sure you uninstall all Symantec appearances;
check you registry also, and look for "liveupdate" and other such related
operations on your PC.
I have avoided Norton for about 2 years now due to the tremendous overhead
required but also because of the pricing. Sadly, name brand computers come
with this stuff imbedded yet Microsoft is the company tagged as the
monopolistic villian because they add a browser with their OS. One has to
question the wisdom and marketing savvy of HP/Compaq and others who enter
into co-marketing agreements with software vendors, and present these
products as "added value" to their hardware offerings.
Sorry for the political opinion here.

You definitely could use your XP firewall, many people do.

RR might also provide you with a security suite, I know my ISP [Charter]
does. It's part of the service we pay for now, and your's may be the
same. If they don't, many people are satisfied with their XP firewall.
