Is McAfee still a system hog these days?

Is McAfee the system hog it once was a few years back? Verizon's
internet security re-branding is now McAfee (again) and I almost
always advise people to get off of it in exchange for Norton (2009 or
greater). I used to advocate NOD32 until Norton NIS stopped eating
system resources like candy in '09.

Note: for some reason, AV-Comparatives does not list McAfee in their
performance test suite. ................why?

Retail - yes.
Enterprise (v8.70i) - no

I don't know, but supposedly Norton AV was a resource hog, but has now
slimmed down and is acceptable.

I might get Norton since it comes free with this HP system I want.

Careful here. The primary system hoggedness came from the always-
on protection firewall protection. So you'd be looking into Norton
Internet Security.

Don't do it.

You'd be better off with the free Avira AntiVir.

Don't do it.

You'd be better off with the free Avira AntiVir.

I just looked at most of the av-comparatives.org test results
involving Avira. It seems to do really well. I'll have to keep an
eye on it.

Not just acceptable, it's now great! NOD32 level of low system
impact. That happened in 2009 when apparently they /finally/ got the
message.
