Is it worth the cost?

I am purchasing a new desktop for home use and am trying to decide whether to
get XP Pro. as the operating system. I will give my 5 year old computer to
my spouse and suggest that she use it rather than mine. Can I use the files
on the old computer and/or transfer them to the new computer without
physically copying them? Computer is used to network with office and for
basic personal use functions.

Your network admin for your office will be able to tell you if need XP Pro
or not. If you don't need it to access the offeice network then it's not
worth the extra cost.

You can network your old and new computer and share the files. My
recommendation is to use the Files and Settings Transfer wizard and move the
personal files to the new computer. This will transfer email and files in My
Documents and some program settings. Then setup a shared folder on one of
the computers to share files between the two pc's.

For what it's worth, it is my understanding that Microsoft will be
supporting WinXP Pro for five additional years beyond Windows Home Edition.

That might be another factor for you to consider in your decision.

well, if you're going to use it in the office and will require the ability to
be a member of the domain then get XP Pro. However, you can connect to
network shares/printers without issue with XP Home. Talk to your sys admin.

I've heard that rumour as well. The Microsoft web site doesn't support the
rumour. Both XP Home and Pro say that mainstream support will end two years
after it's replacement is released and extended support five years after
that.

Is this some not-so-subtle code for the "K"lan?
